The Weight
"I wanted to write against this, and so I was writing a history of the people I did not want to forget. And I loved it; nothing else mattered, because I was remembering, I was staving off death."
In the quote, Ghansah is referring to "this" as the certainty of a "black death". When I think of the black death I think of the bubonic plague that occurred hundreds of years ago, but the author here compares it to the actual death of a black man in America that is caused by neglect, insults, and injuries, and in the end, you are forgotten. As a writer, I felt like he took it upon himself to keep the black community, Americans and human beings, alive and honored through his work. It was important to him and I think it should be important to everyone to keep their memory alive and to keep discussing what has happened in our history so we can make sure that such hate never happens again.
